A glimpse of Southern European culture can be seen everywhere in Goa. The place popularly known as the Portugal of India gives out vistas of colonial rule. Visible everywhere in this picture perfect tiny state are swaying palm trees, blue waters and warm sands. It is one place where one can experience the fusion of the West in perfect combination with the culture of the East. There is far more to the natural beauty and cultural confluence of Goa. You will discover the joyousness of breathing in the beachy air combines so well with the party atmosphere.
The Goa
Dotted with old and some new churches, Goa takes you into the past and brings you back into the present with ease. One must visit the church designed by Alonso de Albuquerque in 1519. It is best known for its splendid sunsets and is located in old Goa. Another place on your must visit list is the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary just about 9 kilometres south of Polem.
It is easily accessible and houses several varieties of snakes, frogs, Sambars, leopards etc. The thrill of being in the wilderness will woo anyone who is into spotting wildlife. You can better your experience by staying at a forest department cottage within the wildlife reserve.
Goa is also a gastronomic delight and there are many cafes, and restaurants that offer a blend of both Indian and Portuguese cuisines. From beach side cafes to very upscale fine dine restaurants; you will find them all here. It’s worth trying a few while you holiday in Goa.
But it is not all good in this tiny paradise state of India. Lately and now increasingly, Goa has been plagued with availability and consumption of drugs and banned narcotics including prescription medicines which are rampantly abused. The government laws are not fully executed at the ground level due to the many loopholes present in the system, which are smartly used by drug lords and a scheming local mafia.
Population has increased many folds here and is exerting pressure on the natural resources available. Pollution is also increasing and the noose is tightening on the water quality, especially in the more touristy parts of Goa. Several beach areas can be seen littered with glass, cans, polybags and other unsightly rubbish.
It’s time for the government and people of Goa to take some tough steps to stop the abuse that has come about recently and restore Goa’s beauty and hospitality to what it originally was.
